"Dr. Dolittle" is a good-hearted, if slightly crude, movie about a doctor who can talk and listen to animals, who -- almost as often as they talk -- loudly pass gas, which young movie viewers will adore.((Murphy plays a famous veterinarian whose animal clinic and home life are demanding: His 16-year-old daughter Charisse (Symone) is starting to date. But his wife (Wilson) is remarkably tolerant of their house full of pets and a yard full of wild animals, including a raccoon who appears in an emergency. It turns out that Joseph Potter, a plump, sneering forester (Jones), is about to level the nearby woods. Animals led by a Godfather-style beaver ask Dr. Dolittle to save it. Potter is represented in court by slick attorney Jack Riley (Pollak), so Dolittle recruits his lawyer wife to oppose him.((The land in question is the habitat of a female bear, a member of a protected species. But she can't reproduce all by herself, the villain's lawyer argues, so what's the use of preserving her habitat? Dolittle thinks fast, and recruits a performing male bear from a circus. Can the bear perform a wild male bear's functions? When the bear is shy, Dolittle becomes an animal sex counselor. The bear is so accommodating he meets Dolittle in a rustic restaurant, where he even uses the bathroom, and proves one of the funniest elements in the movie. In another funny sequence, the bear creeps out onto a precarious log to try to grab some honey, to prove himself. Will the bear master the intricacies of the reproductive process? Will Dr. and Mrs. Dolittle accept a measly compromise offer of 10 acres? The story takes an unexpected twist when the animals of the world go on strike and shut down Sea World. As the PG rating suggests, this is a movie aimed at young audiences, who are likely to enjoy the cute animals, the simple plot, the broad humor, and Dolittle's amazingly detailed explanation of how a bear's elimination system shuts itself down during hibernation.
